About The Print: .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     A Confederate forager takes a rest after bagging a big Tom, a good start to the days hunt. During winter quarters a good hunter was invaluable, especially when the supply lines were being interrupted by Union cavalry. . .                                                       After failing to hold Chattanooga in November of ’63, General Braxton Brag was replaced with General Joseph E. Johnston. Johnston quartered his "Army of the Tennessee" in Dalton, Ga. where they remained until early May of ’64. While holding off Sherman’s "Army of the Cumberland", beginning on May 8th in Dalton, and repelling an early attempt to flank him in Resaca, Johnston reluctantly retreated after several days of fighting. Eventually Sherman’s overwhelming strength in numbers and supplies would cause the Confederate army to abandon their hopes of holding Atlanta. .                                                                                                The destruction of the land and its resources by Sherman’s army, made the skills of the forager even more in demand. Barren fields and ransacked farms left feeding the Southern army a difficult task. Although the food brought back to the camp by the forager was surely a welcomed sight, only one other thing was probably more welcomed, the mail wagon. While food may have satisfied the starving bellies of the weary troops, their souls also starved for a word from a loved one back home.
